East Neuk Festival announces 2020 programme

Fri 7 Feb 20

Scotland’s East Neuk Festival (ENF) 2020 will run from 1-5 July with a range of concerts held in and around the fishing villages of St Monans, Anstruther, Kilrenny and Crail.

Highlights include:

  • The Tallis Scholars give their first performance of Arvo Pärt’s rarely-performed Kanon Pokajanen (Canon of Repentance) as part of a festival focus on the composer
  • The return of ENF retreat: three outstanding young musicians are coached by cellist Valentin Erben in Mozart’s Divertimento K563
  • Community beach cleans along Fife’s coast will turn beach rubbish into musical instruments for ENF’s 2020 Big Project, culminating in a 100-strong ‘Fantastic Plastic Parade Band’ in partnership with the Scottish Fisheries Museum and Cellardyke Sea Queen Festival
  • The return of ENF regulars including pianists Llŷr Williams and Yeol Eum Son and the Calidore and Castalian Quartets. The festival also welcomes debuts from the Belfiato Quintet, harpists Oliver Wass and Esther Swift, organist Tom Wilkinson, Omar Puente Sextet, David Chadwick, Marit Fält, and conductor Daniel Blendulf who conducts the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in the festival’s closing concert
  • New for 2020, Listen Closely events delve deep into two recent works for string quartet by Thomas Adès and Caroline Shaw, led by the Calidore and Castalian Quartets and festival director Svend McEwan-Brown
  • Non-classical offerings include six Wide Open concerts which take in music from Iraq to Sweden via Cuba, Hollywood and the Scottish borders

Festival director Svend McEwan-Brown said: ‘Thinking about ENF’s programme this year began with rubbish – literally! We are a coastal festival and I am delighted that composer and instrument maker Graeme Leak will be leading our Big Project to clear East Neuk beaches then turn some of what we uplift into brilliant instruments to play.

‘Every single event at ENF is unique and curated – something we are all proud of. I hope that there’s something to delight every kind of music lover.’

Selected concerts will be recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

General booking opens 13 February.
