Whitburn, Wallace and World Premieres

Mon 4 Nov 19

John Wallace CBE OBE, internationally renowned trumpet player, educationalist, composer and one of Fife’s most celebrated musicians, is joining Whitburn Band, one of the UK’s finest brass bands, to present a unique concert on Saturday 9th November, at 7.30pm at The Old Kirk, Kirk Wynd,Kirkcaldy, KY1 1EH.

John Wallace (former Principal of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and founder of The Wallace Collection brass ensemble), will join Whitburn Band (ranked 9th in the Brass Band World Rankings) for an innovative concert which focuses its core theme around Remembrance and the World Wars.  Providing an eclectic mix of pieces and styles which are sure to touch and uplift emotions at this reflective time, audiences will also enjoy the opportunity to experience world premieres and hear exceptional musicianship from this rare combination of performers.

Wallace and Whitburn have recently collaborated on a music project dear to John’s heart, recording a movement of his new composition ‘Symphony for Brass Band’ due to be released later this year; written in honour of his late father, Kiff Wallace, and dedicated to many of Scotland’s distinguished bands.  Building upon this successful venture, Whitburn Band will be presenting public premieres of two more of John’s recent compositions at this special concert, and also welcomes him as a guest soloist, enabling audiences to hear him perform two of his new arrangements of cornet solo favourites with brass band accompaniment.

John commented: “I feel so privileged that Whitburn Band will be performing two my latest compositions – they have been in my creative melting pot for a long time, and to hear them as finished works, bringing them to my roots in Fife to present to the general public for the first time, is incredibly exciting.  I’ve been celebrating my 70th Birthday this year and having the opportunity to perform as a guest soloist with this wonderful band will be a definite highlight, especially as they are supporting my passion for 19th century classic cornet solos and enabling me to present my favourites by Hartmann and Owen in my performance!”

The concert also shares in the celebration of the band’s own extraordinary achievement at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, held at the Royal Albert Hall in October, where they won 3rd place and secured a 23 year old record for Scottish bands at this prestigious event.

Charlie Farren, Band Chairman commented: Everyone at Whitburn is really looking forward to performing once again with John Wallace, following our successful collaboration earlier this year. John is an incredible musician, and it is an honour to share the stage with him once more.

Tickets for the concert are available at the door, priced at £8/£5 (concessions).
