What is Sustainable Tourism?

Tourism is a significant contributor to global emissions and climate change. Services such as travel, lodging and food add up to a major environmental impact. Tourism also stands at the forefront of suffering the consequences of climate catastrophe, with extreme weather already impacting on Scotland’s landscape, animals and heritage as well as its communities and businesses.  Things are likely to get worse in the coming decades, but scientists argue urgent action can limit the worst effects of climate change.

Sustainable Tourism

80% of the tourism industry is made up of small to medium-sized businesses and through this we have the opportunity to work together to make small changes that have great impacts. Through Climate Action planning and reducing our footprint and emissions, businesses can attract more customers, reduce their running costs and build economic resistance.

The UNWTO defines sustainable tourism as:

“Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities".

With the three pillars of sustainable tourism being:

  • Economic Sustainability
  • Social Sustainability
  • Enviromental Sustainability

“Responsible tourism is all about a collaborative approach for re-building and growing the value of tourism. It does so in a way that makes better places for people to live and visit in every corner of Scotland. It maximises the positive benefits of tourism for everyone. This includes host communities and the environment.”
