19 May 2022

CELEBRATING THE 2022 TOP 100 WOMEN IN TOURISM

Hotel Managers, Guest Experience experts, Founders, café owners, Project Managers, Business Development leads, and social influencers are among those recognised within the 2022 Top 100 Women In Tourism.  From Orkney to Dumfries & Galloway, the Isle of Arran to Fife; what connects these amazing women is their passion for Scottish tourism.  A project driven by peers across the sector, in 2022 nearly 250 nominations were received – the highest number in the awards seven-year history, and reflective of the difficult 24 months tourism has endured throughout the pandemic.  Among those included in the 2022 Top 100 Women In Tourism are:

  • Amanda Wrathall, Sales & Marketing Director, Edinburgh International Conference Centre in Edinburgh
  • Belen Catalan, Visitor Services Manager at Deanston Distillery in Perthshire
  • Janani Prabhakaran, Founder of Unbaggaged, based in Glasgow
  • Jo De Sylva, Chair of Visit Inverness Loch Ness, based in the Highlands
  • Kirsten Gow, Project Manager for the Scottish Islands Passport, based on the Isle of Jura
  • Marlene Thomson, Tour Guide & Owner of My Orkney Tours in Orkney
  • Sandy Maxwell-Forbes, Centre Director for The Great Tapestry of Scotland in the Scottish Borders
  • Sheila Gilmore, Chief Executive of VisitArran on the Isle of Arran

Commenting on the 2020 Top 100 Women In Tourism, Susan Russell, Chair of Women In Tourism, said:

“We have been completely overwhelmed by the response to the 2022 Top Women In Tourism, and on behalf of the entire board I would like to say a huge thank you to each and every person that took the time to nominate someone doing amazing things for our industry.  Today’s announcement recognises those that are leading the way in innovative ideas, are supporting and mentoring colleagues through unprecedented times, and are welcoming visitors from both near and far.

Now, more than ever, it’s important that we recognise not just the economic benefits of tourism, but the opportunity for the sector to be recognised as a career of choice.  The 2022 Top 100 highlights the wealth of talent we have here in Scotland, and we hope it inspires and motivates future tourism leaders.  I’d like to congratulate our 2022 Top 100 Women In Tourism on all they’ve achieved, and continue to do.  Without your passion, resilience and dedication, tourism in Scotland simply wouldn’t be what it is today.”

The inaugural Women In Tourism Top 100 was announced in July 2018, in response to the Caterer Magazine’s Top 100 Most Powerful people in hospitality, which recognised only 13 women.  To date they have not yet run this project again.
