Discount for Small Tourism Businesses to go Green

24 November 2022

£500 discount offer available to smaller businesses

Scotland's smaller tourism and hospitality establishments are encouraged to find out how leading international sustainability award, Green Key, can help them to secure year-on-year environmental improvements, financial savings and attract customers who are increasingly seeking out sustainable options.

Green Key is working with environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful to give smaller and medium tourism establishments the chance to join Green Key with a discount of £500 off the first year of membership.

The discount is available for ten micro, small and SME businesses until March 2023, on a first come first served basis.

What's involved?

Through Green Key, Keep Scotland Beautiful offer a comprehensive in-person audit of premises and additional support to help tourism establishments achieve year-on-year environmental improvements and reduce climate-change-causing greenhouse gas emissions.

The audit process includes advice on the likes of energy use in hotel rooms and laundry to food waste in kitchens and how employees work day-to-day.

The Green Key audit also provides an ideal opportunity to access advice on how to make financial savings, such as through more efficient use of energy and resources – vital with the current rise in operating costs.

And with COP26 in Glasgow last year having put a spotlight on sustainability in Scotland's tourism sector, Green Key provides a way to help businesses showcase their green credentials to a large pool of environmentally conscious consumers.

Who can apply?

Micro, small and SME businesses within the tourism sector are eligible for discounted membership. All businesses will need to fit one of the six site categories:

  • Hotels and hostels with more than 15 bedrooms
  • Small accommodation – small hotels, hostels, guest houses, B&Bs, eco-lodges, eco-farms etc.
  • Campsites and holiday parks
  • Conference centres without accommodation
  • Restaurants and cafés
  • Attractions – museums, visitor and interpretation centres, theme parks.

Visit the Green Key webpage for more information on eligibility criteria.
